The deep feelings I encountered on a rainy Sunday afternoon in a Miami pottery studio

On a rainy Sunday, I sat in a backyard studio molding clay and felt completely free.
Happy.
At peace.
I’m still unraveling exactly what that day did to me, honestly. The feelings ran deeper than those words, but I’m working through it.
Here’s the best way I can describe it: you know that feeling when you hear a song for the first time and it just gets you? That was me with “My Way” by Venna. I was so moved I immediately texted the one person I knew would understand it. And of course, they did.
That’s what sitting in that studio felt like. Something opened up.
I know now that I need to create more with my hands. There’s something about the weight of clay, the moisture of it, the way it responds to pressure, that brought me real pleasure.
(I paused writing this to look it up, because of course I did.)
Turns out the hands and fingertips have more nerve endings than almost anywhere else in the body. The sensation is the point. Obvious in hindsight, but now I have the receipts.

For the last couple of years, my goal has been simple: take my time back. From social media, from work, from anything making me feel anxious or disengaged. I made a list of things I wanted to try, and if they stuck, I’d turn them into actual hobbies.
For my birthday, I booked a two-hour private pottery class. I made a little vase on the wheel and a handmade tray for it to sit on. A few months later, on that rainy Sunday, I finally went back to glaze my pieces and make a few more. Life got busy. It always does.
But when I got back in that studio, time slowed down. I was focused. My body felt calm. Rain outside, trees rustling, a good playlist running. It was just… perfect.
Some things you don’t need to rush to understand. You just need to show up and let your hands do the work.
Love,
Sentrell
