Danielle McKinney at Norton Museum of Art

I went to see an art exhibit of Danielle Mckinney at Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach. Danielle’s work caught my eye when I saw Shelter, 2023. I’ve been following her work since then. When my partner surprised me with a visit to the museum I had no idea this exhibit was even happening. We typically drive up to West Palm Beach to eat at a bbq spot, Tropical Smokehouse, so I didn’t think anything of it when he suggested we make the drive. He concocted a successful surprise!

Norton Museum of Art

This was actually my first time visiting the Norton Museum of Art. It’s a beautiful museum with so many pieces to see. The Danielle Mckinney exhibition was apart of a larger exhibition called Recognition of Art by Women featuring art for contemporary women artists. When we arrived to the museum it was packed due to it being the last day of the Rembrandt exhibition. It was great for us because Danielle’s exhibit wasn’t nearly as full.

I was overtaken with emotions immediately as I looked at her beautiful work. Luckily, I was able to cry in peace due to it only being a handful of people present. As I made my way through the exhibition, I was genuinely grateful for the experience to see her work in person. Besides seeing Shelter, 2023 in person, I also wanted to see Sandman, 2024. I own the print from Danielle’s collaboration with Avant Arte in 2025.

Here are some of my favorite pieces I saw during my visit.

I love the way she paints black women in leisure. It’s something that brings me lots of joy. Women relaxing, reading, sleeping, smoking, reflecting, dreaming…It’s magnificent. And to see it all in person, I will truly never forget my visit. Walking around and taking it all in slowly was a dream. The level of detail she puts into her work. Example: One of Danielle’s signatures is to paint the women’s nails in her paintings red or vibrant pink highlighting their hands that are typically holding a cigarette. It’s all so delicate, even sensual.

I posted a TikTok of my visit to the Norton. Watch it below or see it here.

Danielle Mckinney at Norton Museum of Art is on exhibit until October 4, 2026. If you are in the South Florida area I highly suggest you visit asap.
